Washing machine works by pedaling
GiraDora came with the aim of helping thousands of needy families and generating income for poor communities
Designers Ji A You and Alex Cabunoc, thinking of needy families who cannot afford to buy modern electric clothes washers, developed GiraDora, a sustainable washing machine that works by pedaling.
For the pedal washing machine to start its process, just add soap and water and start pedaling. The GiraDora mimics the normal process of an electric washer, but uses motive power to make clothes spin inside a drum. Those who pedal the machine can sit on the drum, avoiding back pain, common to those who wash clothes by hand.
The project developed in the United States aims to help communities in developing countries that do not have electricity or financial conditions to purchase a traditional washing machine.
The machine, in addition to making life easier, can help certain families to generate income, whether by renting the machine, serving as a washerwoman, or reselling it.
GiraDora is currently being tested in Peru and the expectation is that it will be introduced in Latin American countries and India, where there are high levels of poverty. The washing machine costs U$40 (approximately R$80).
