Three ways to get the bad smell out of the trash

Using simple ingredients, such as vinegar and baking soda, it is possible to remove the bad smell that remains in the trash.

Remove smell from trash

Food, napkins, packaging, bottles and food scraps, among others, are part of the waste consumed daily at home. And their destination ends up being the kitchen trash, which stores them so that they can later be taken to landfills or dumps. Organic waste mixes there and it is not uncommon to leave an unpleasant odor. Discover homemade ways to remove the bad smell from the trash.

It is precisely the trash can that can be the focus of constraints during visits from friends or relatives, since, due to the accumulation of waste and the turnover of various materials that pass through there, the bad smell can persist, even with the periodic removal of the trash . To prevent this from happening, the first step is to adopt the three "errs" rule: reduce, reuse and recycle most of your waste. Plastic, metal and glass can be recycled. Organic waste can go through the process of homemade composting or even crushing. Napkins, paper towels and toothpicks can even go to the composter, but this is not always recommended. Leftovers of cooked meat end up having to go to the conventional trash. Read more about the issue in the How to Reduce Household Waste Guide.

If even with all these efforts the trash is still causing problems, some homemade cleaning products can help you.

How to get rid of the smell of the trash

1. Try putting a few tablespoons of baking soda in the bottom of the trash can. The alkaline nature of baking soda will absorb unpleasant smells like spoiled food, for example. Take the opportunity to learn about the various uses of baking soda.

2. If you don't want to run any risk of the unpleasant smell of the trash returning or getting worse, add, at the bottom of the trash, along with the baking soda, some baby wipes. If you don't have baking soda, coffee grounds also serve this purpose.

3. This action is appropriate for anyone who suffers from a very strong bad smell from the trash. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray the inside walls of your trash can (if you have hydrogen peroxide on hand, apply a few drops). After that, use an old cloth to rub the vinegar into the trash. Finally, wash the interior with hot water.
