Booklet teaches how to make renovations and plan a house in a sustainable way
Several simple techniques can be important for making renovation and planning tasks greener
The International Construction Council (CIB) points out that the construction sector consumes the most natural resources. In order to minimize environmental impacts, the concept of sustainable construction emerges, in which techniques are sought that ensure greater efficiency and responsibility from the beginning to the end of the work.
“Sustainable Private Buildings and Reforms” is a publication that is part of the Sustainable Consumption Notebooks series and was launched by the Ministry of the Environment. The goal is to guide consumers on how to make housing and renovations sustainable.
With just nine pages, the booklet shows a map with each room in the house and points out the options for carrying out the work within the concepts of sustainability. The use of building materials should follow what is best for health and the environment. In the case of using paints, for example, water-based ones are preferable, as they avoid bacteria, fungi and algae in humid regions. When using wood, the tip is to prioritize the certified ones, which guarantees that the product does not come from an illegally deforested area.
In addition, the publication emphasizes the use of natural lighting and ventilation, which reduces electricity consumption. For this, when building, the resident needs to take into account the climate of the place and the location of the land.
In outdoor areas, the tip is to use recycled construction and permeable paving. According to the guide, prefer the interlocked external floor, made of pressed material and which has a long service life and low maintenance cost.
