The adoption of animals is not just for those who want to get home and be welcomed with love, affection and happiness by a cute pet. It requires responsibility and empathy for those who provide this warm welcome after a long day of work, stress and worries, the pets - but who also demand care in difficult times such as in cases of illness.

Seen as an object, many animals are abandoned and mistreated for various "reasons", such as lack of time, money, some bad behavior or even because they have grown up and are no longer "cute". In Brazil, this situation applies to more than 20 million abandoned dogs, not counting the many other animals that end up having the same fate. However, thanks to people who are passionate about animals and willing to do anything to save them from this reality, the animals have the chance of a new life, and as a family.

If you are one of those people who are passionate about animals (or want to fall in love with them), here are some simple tips that can help you:

Institutions

NGOs and animal protection groups run campaigns, fairs and use the reach of social media so that those interested in adoption can find a new, furry member of the family. Posting photos and telling their stories, these groups take people to the reality of animals, making them reflect and fall in love with the animals and the cause. If you love animals but currently can't have your own, check out the article "How to help animal shelters without spending money?".

Reflections before adopting

  • Don't buy, adopt. Researches already show that this prejudice towards mutts, or without defined race (SRE), has already diminished a lot over time. Why pay exorbitant prices for an animal, if there are several on the streets and shelters, just waiting for a home? Not to mention that the "industry" of domestic animals, especially dogs, is often cruel. In addition, by adopting, you contribute to reducing overpopulation and abuse.
  • Think carefully before making this decision! A pet is like a child, it involves responsibilities, expenses, willingness and willingness. Hasty adoption or purchase ends up resulting in abandonment. Research beforehand about the animal you intend to adopt, knowing a little about its habits and lifespan.
  • If you already have an animal or small children at home, think about adapting them to the new pet.
  • Make sure everyone in your household is in agreement with the adoption.
  • If you want to help and have financial, psychological and time availability, try to adopt animals with physical, health or elderly problems, which tend to be the most neglected at adoption fairs.

If you've gone through all the steps, you're ready to start looking for the pet (there's a list of organizations at the end of the story), but first you need to take a look at the adoption process.

Process

Whether through the Zoonoses Control Center (CCZ) in your city or through an NGO, the adopter must present: a copy of the RG, CPF and proof of residence - in some cases it is necessary to go through an interview to make sure that the animal is going to a good home. The adopter must also complete and sign (by anyone over 18 or 21, depending on the requirement) a term of responsible ownership, assuming responsibility for the animal's well-being and agreeing that, in case of non-adaptation, both the pet and of the human, will return the animal to the institution.

In general, animals are already vaccinated, dewormed and neutered (an important point, not only for their health, but also for the control of overpopulation). In some places, such as CCZ, the animal may come with an ID chip in case it escapes or is abandoned.

Puppies?

Protectors advise against the adoption of puppies, as they are still in development and it is not possible to determine their characteristics, while adult dogs already have their personalities developed and, therefore, have easier adaptation and education. It is also important that you choose an animal with energy compatible with yours, otherwise it is necessary to provide conditions for him to use all that energy. Never tie your pet on a leash unless you are going for a walk or taking it to the veterinary hospital. Do not naturalize this cruel attitude. This only makes you stressed out. If you don't have enough room in the house to ensure your pet's freedom, don't adopt.

On some sites, you can search for your pet using filters, such as size, sex, age, region, city, and even some of its characteristics. Below are some of these multiple coverage sites - mostly dogs and cats are found, but some of these NGOs rescue and donate other animals, such as rabbits, horses, etc.:
