Are regular electric plane flights close to becoming a reality?

Agitation in the market leads to believe that the industry should bet on the sector

The idea that electric cars will dominate the market a few decades from now (or even sooner) is entirely palpable - news of new releases and future restrictions on fossil fuels for passenger cars in European countries is rife. But can't we say the same about electric planes, which currently use dense fuels and are responsible for many emissions?

The movement of large companies indicates that electric planes are starting to "take flight". European low-cost airline EasyJet, which carries out passenger flights, has promised to power up its entire fleet of planes by 2027. A Seattle-based startup called Zunum, backed by giants like Boeing and JetBlue, is betting on hybrid and electric passenger flights as early as 2022, and on all-electric flights shortly after that date.

This is an amazing ambition. The key to understanding the plan of Zunum is the fact that it is developing smaller aircraft, with capacities ranging from ten to 50 seats and that are capable of using the US regional airport network to handle trips of around 1,200 kilometers or less - this reduces travel time in half and offers competitive prices. The proposed model, says the company, is capable of providing an 80% reduction in regional air travel emissions.

CNN reports that Boeing is buying the Aurora Flight Sciences. Initially, the great enthusiasm surrounding this particular acquisition focused on the experience of Aurora developing robotic copilots and autonomous drones, but she also specializes in electric propulsion systems, including a vertical take-off electric aircraft.

All of this makes us believe that, at the very least, there is an increase in interest in hybrid and even all-electric passenger trips. The hope is that battery prices will start to fall until such travel becomes commercially viable. And that would drastically reduce emissions.
