Are you in the habit of flossing? See 5 good reasons
Five experts cited reasons why you should not miss flossing daily
Are you in the habit of flossing? If not, it should. Even though you've heard this advice from your dentist thousands of times, you may not have heard the reasons why they insist so much. And there are several.
The website Live Science spoke with five specialists in oral hygiene who explained the importance of flossing. See here why flossing is so important and check out the main considerations made by professionals:
- Microorganisms present in dental plaque cause inflammation of light tissue, such as the gums. If left unchecked, inflammation can develop into gingivitis which, if left untreated through good oral hygiene, can destroy the deep tissue and eventually the bone that supports the tooth in the socket. Flossing is necessary to remove these plaques on the surface of the teeth, especially between two teeth, as the brush cannot reach such small spaces.
- There is evidence that there is a link between periodic diseases (gingivitis) and systemic diseases (diabetes, obesity, pneumonia). That fact alone is an excellent reason to floss.
- Merely maintaining a healthy diet with few carbohydrates (which damage teeth) is not enough. If we analyze two groups that have an identical diet, but divided between those who use dental floss and those who don't, we will see that the second group will certainly have problems related to inflammation in the gums and even in the bone. However, incorrect flossing can also damage the gums, tearing them apart.
- Each body responds to inflammation in its own way - gingivitis, for example, is one of the responses. Therefore, a treatment done with good hygiene with dental floss does not mean that the results will appear immediately. The same applies to regular use of the floss: some people are more susceptible to such diseases and may have to use this device more than others to keep their oral health up to date. People undergoing chemotherapy or treatments that affect the quantity and quality of saliva should pay special attention to oral hygiene. The same goes for pregnant women.
- It is necessary to create a daily habit and this is not always easy. To help, experts believe flossing after brushing your teeth is best for this as it creates a process of associating brushing with flossing – which is great for memory.
