Old Factory Becomes Community Garden in China

The site also functions as a venue for events and environmental education courses

Imagine an urban garden capable of offering, for free, different types of food. In Shenzen, one of the biggest and most important cities in China, this scenario is already a reality.

And the most curious thing is that the setting in which the vegetable garden was built was in an old glass factory. The area of 2,000 square meters is home to the community garden called Value Farm, whose motto is the “value of cultivating the land in a collective effort”.

Created three months ago, the initiative resembles a green oasis in the middle of an industrial area and reconnects city dwellers with the environment and the therapeutic experience of cultivation, in addition to improving the local microclimate, according to Arch Daily.

Concerned with the conscientious use of resources, the architects responsible for the project preserved the factory's original characteristics, such as the old walls and bricks, which were reused to form specific quadrants for each type of cultivation.

environmental education

An artificial pond acts as a source that collects natural underground water and, through an integrated sprinkler system, guarantees the necessary amount of water for the plantation. To further leverage its potential, the space hosts cultural events and environmental education programs. The garden is expected to become a model for similar initiatives across China.

It is only necessary that those responsible for the initiative confirm, in a scientific way, that having an urban garden cannot make the food produced end up acquiring traces of pollutants, as the plants absorb different types of toxins (see more here).
