Inspired by the Japanese origami technique, the lexus recently showed an unconventional version of its IS sedan. The model has a total of 1,700 sheets of cardboard cut and glued to form a faithful copy of the car's design.

To assemble the "origami" IS, the lexus partnered with two London companies, Laser Cut Works and the Scales and Models to make model of electric car out of cardboard. The Japanese company provided a 3D digital model of the car. This image was divided into some parts, such as the body, dashboard, seats and wheels.

Model took months to make but the work was worth it

In order to support so much cardboard, there is a metal frame underneath. The laser-cut sheets are joined with glue - which requires great care and precision, since once the glue dries, there is no way to change the position.

According to those responsible for the project, weeks were needed to cut the leaves alone - the completion of the replica took a total of three months.

The interior was reproduced in its entirety (even with the little clock on the panel); the wheels turn, the headlights come on, and an electric motor lets the car go.
