On April 22, Earth Day is celebrated. The date was created in 1970 by US senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson.

After a series of disasters and trends in the 1950s in the United States, scientists began to pay more attention to how rapid industrialization was affecting the environment. With the purpose of opening discussions about the concern with mass hunger, the great population growth, air and water pollution and the preservation of the planet's natural resources, the environmental movement emerged.

The first demonstration took place on April 22, 1970, at the initiative of Senator Gaylord Nelson and with the participation of thousands of people, mainly high school and university students. The movement's focus was on creating an environmental agenda and, fortunately, pressure from protesters reached its goal when the US government created the Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Protection Agency). The date was then adopted as Earth Day.

Initially celebrated only in the United States, Earth Day gained an international stamp only in the early 1990s, when it mobilized around 220 million people in 141 countries.

Earth Day does not belong to any body or entity. It is a party that can and should be freely celebrated by anyone anywhere. Furthermore, Earth Day has become an important educational and informational event for the assessment of problems and solutions related to the environment.
