Hair

Is your hair not very healthy lately? Well know that, instead of buying thousands of expensive products that boast new things, an effective alternative is to become a fan of the techniques Low Poo and No Poo . With them, you avoid the application of sulfates and petrolatum on your hair, favoring the hydration of the locks.

But why are these substances bad? Petrolatum damages can be understood in depth in this link, they are in the composition of conditioners and other creams. The focus of the current article is the harmful effects of sulfate, which are found in the overwhelming majority of shampoos (and also in some hair dyes, believe me). Let's go to them.

What is sulfate?

In summary, sulfate (S02-4) is a salt with a detergent action responsible for the shampoo's foam. It is different from table salt, sodium chloride (NaCl), also present in the composition, but which acts as an emulsifier, leaving the shampoo with a more viscous texture. When a shampoo has the words "no salt" on the label, it is sodium chloride that is referred to, but unfortunately, it is the less aggressive of the two.

Therefore, it is important to check the shampoos labels, due to this double meaning advertisement. It is known that the most common are the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS - sodium lauryl sulfate) and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES - sodium lauryl ether sulfate).

In the next stage of hair care, when using conditioners, masks and creams, you can find other ingredients harmful to your hair, petroleum derivatives, which accumulate in the strands, suffocating them and causing opacity. It's almost impossible to find petrolatum (petroleum derivatives) in shampoos, so don't worry about them right now.

environment and health

Diethanolamines (DEA) and triethanolamines (TEA), and derivatives such as Cocamide-DEA present in shampoos and detergents here in Brazil, due to their low cost, are ingredients that balance the pH of cosmetics, hygiene and cleaning products. They also help to create a creamy texture and foaming action. We already have an article about the possible harm of this ingredient.

We have already published an article about 1,4-Dioxane, which is a contaminant found in shampoos under different names, or joined to other compounds, such as the suffix -PEG, polyethylene, among others.

In water, it becomes stable and does not break down its particles to biodegrade, which harms water bodies. It is also rated 2B by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), meaning it is possibly carcinogenic to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thinks the same.

The US Department of Health and Human Services views the compound as a possible carcinogen candidate.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is known to cause allergies in many people, especially children, sometimes located on the scalp, causing itching and redness, but sometimes the effects are dizziness or difficulty breathing.

We have prepared a list of products released for Low Poo and in the well and that should be avoided to leave your hair with a light grip. Save it to your cell phone or print it out to consult when shopping. Don't forget to check out the petrolatum list too!
