KeepCup, the reusable coffee cup

Instead of using a plastic cup, how about drinking your coffee at work in a sustainable cup?

A fully recyclable, reusable, customizable and durable coffee cup. It seems impossible? Well, know that this idea already exists and is materialized. it is about the KeepCup, which promises to combine sustainability with an innovative design. It was conceived in 2009, by Australian brothers Jamie and Abigail Forsyth, as a solution to the waste problems caused by the large number of plastic cups discarded around the world.

Despite being more practical, disposable cups, regardless of the materials used (plastic, paper or Styrofoam), bring many problems, both in environmental terms and in health issues. Many think that they would bring an ecological advantage, as they would not use water to be washed, but this is not true when analyzing the entire life cycle of the product (to learn more about the issue: "Disposable cup: impacts and alternatives").

The stylish design of the KeepCup it has functionality similar to the traditional disposable cup used in several countries, but with many advantages. The product is able to maintain a warm content for at least half an hour. The result is a lightweight design, easy to use, resistant and non-toxic, that is, it does not release bisphenol-A (BPA) or styrene, substances that are harmful to human health, as mentioned here and here, respectively.

The ease is perceived in its use and maintenance of the cup, since the KeepCup can be used in the microwave, dishwasher and is compatible with most car and bicycle coasters. And to recycle it, just take it apart and put it in the plastic bin.

Sustainable

According to its manufacturer, if we consider the impact of a unit of the KeepCup and we make the comparison with an ordinary disposable plastic cup, the innovation promotes a reduction of 36% to 47% in the emission of gases that can cause the greenhouse effect, a reduction of 64% to 85% in the use of water for its manufacture, and a 91% to 92% reduction in waste going to landfill (since the product can be reused many times).

A lifecycle analysis of the KeepCup compared to disposables. You KeepCups they use half the carbon, one third the water use and half the energy compared to disposables and tend to decrease further over the life of the product.

O KeepCup has a conscious energy expenditure and was created taking into account the sum total of energy required for the entire life cycle of a product, which includes raw material extraction, transportation, manufacturing, assembly, installation, disassembly, deconstruction or decomposition.

Since its launch, manufacturers claim that 800,000 trees have been preserved, 26,000 tons of waste have been avoided and nearly two billion cups have stopped going to landfills.
