Refrigerators are reused and become libraries at the University of Blumenau
The director teamed up with volunteer artists to paint them
What is the use of a refrigerator? If you answered conserve food, you are partially right. Thanks to the upcycle, the technique of reusing an object for an unforeseen purpose in your production process, refrigerators are becoming libraries!
The project takes place at the Regional University of Blumenau (FURB), located in Santa Catarina, with the help of Alan Filagrana, director of culture at the Central Directory of Students (DCE). He decided to reuse refrigerators that were destined for the dump, transforming them into mini-libraries. The shelves were used as bookcases, which were filled with books.
The so-called Geladeirotecas are part of the “Don't leave culture in the fridge!” project, which aims to encourage reading within the university. To distribute the idea among all students, the three refrigerators were placed in busy places on the three FURB campuses, with all books labeled by the project and available for any student, server or university attendee.
This idea was inspired by a reused refrigerator for the same purpose in the city of Araraquara (SP). It was placed in a city square and became a public library, where it is possible to exchange and take the works home.
At the University of Blumenau, it is also allowed to take books home, just paying attention to the return date. By doing this, the user of the unusual library will achieve one of the project's objectives: the circulation of knowledge.
