The United Nations (UN) established June 5 as Environment Day (WED – acronym for World Environment Day) in 1972, initiating the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference. The event was the first major meeting of heads of state organized by the United Nations to address environmental issues. Since then, Environment Day is celebrated every year, always having a different theme and host country. The date has become the main global platform to sensitize people, organizations and countries to the importance of protecting nature.

The day is celebrated in a number of ways in more than 100 countries, ranging from beach cleaning and tree planting actions to inviting employees and partners to get involved and do their part. It's also a great time to show your contribution to society.

In addition to the Environment Day, Brazil also celebrates the National Environment Week, between the 1st and 5th of June. The awareness week was created by Decree No. 86.028, of May 27, 1981, to complement the celebration of the Environment Day instituted by the UN. The idea is to include society in the discussion of guidelines that deal with the preservation of the Brazilian natural heritage.

The actions related to the theme of each year are coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which carries out, encourages and disseminates events related to the date. Topics such as "Raise your voice, not sea level" (2014), the fight against animal trafficking (2016), plastic pollution (2018) and Air Pollution were already on the agenda. theme is biodiversity.

The Environment Day events are always linked to the Objectives for sustainable development, promoting discussions and awareness so that these objectives can be achieved.
