PET recycling rises in Brazil

Index increased by 7.6%, but structural problems still cause concern

PET is being recycled more in Brazil. Who guarantees it is the Brazilian Association of the PET Industry (Abipet). There was a 7.6% increase in the number of recycled PET packages between 2009 and 2010, according to data released in December 2011.

More than 262 thousand tons of PET (about 55.6% of the total products manufactured with this material in the country) were recycled in 2010. Most of this service was carried out by the category of recycled material collectors. According to entities and companies from four states that participated in the survey (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina), 47% of all recycled packaging was processed by waste picker organizations.

In order, the destinations of the former PET bottles are: textile products (38%), unsaturated and alkyd resins, destined to compose the base of paints and products related to civil construction (19%), and packaging (17%).

Positive numbers, but there are problems

Despite the advance in the recycling index in the national territory, Abipet points out some serious problems that prevent the universal recycling of the material. The lack of skilled and sufficient labor, the slow development of the implementation of selective collection in most cities in the country, and the lack of dissemination of the packaging separation culture throughout society are the main issues identified by the entity . Currently, only 17.8% of the municipalities have a collection service.
