Zera: appliance promises to compost food waste within 24 hours
In a 24-hour cycle of the device, it is possible to recycle all the food waste of a family accumulated in one week
THE WLabs, a technological arm of the multinational whirlpool, created a crowdfunding campaign to launch a product different from the refrigerators, microwaves and washing machines for which the brand became known in the market. Its about Zero Food Recycler.
designed for the kitchen, the reset promises to reduce organic waste by two-thirds (taking into account a volume of 3.5 kg per week) from its original amount through a fully automated process. The result is a ready-to-use fertilizer made over 24 hours - it can be used in many types of gardens (outdoor use is recommended). In other words, it's a kind of automatic composter (learn more about composting in "What composting is and how to make it").
Operation
reset uses oxygen, moisture, heat and mechanical agitation to accelerate the decomposition of a week of organic food waste in 24 hours. The company supplies an additive, based on baking soda and coconut fiber (no harmful chemicals) to facilitate accelerated decomposition. As such, there are differences from traditional composting. At the reset, it is possible to insert meat and dairy residues (avoid large pieces of bones), the process of transforming organic waste into compost is much faster and there is automation - the user does not need to regulate humidity, heat, aeration or if worry about unwanted insects. Another difference with common compost is that the compost resulting from reset it's dry.
- Zero additive: made from coconut fiber and sodium bicarbonate - they are needed to break down food residue molecules;
- Sliding lid - closes the waste bin when the appliance is not in use;
- Mixing Box - holds a week's worth of leftover food (for an average family);
- Output tray - convenient and removable box that contains, after carrying out the internal process of the device, homemade fertilizer ready for use;
- Control Panel - perform functions such as start, stop, pause and receive notifications to run the device after seven days;
- Mixing Motor - activates the mixing blade to process food waste;
- Mixing Blade - together with the heat and additive, the blades revolve and "break" food scraps;
- Filter - designed to reduce odors.
As the process is very fast, the compost does not have the same quality as the traditional one, even though it can be stored for up to six months. The device is 27 cm wide, 55 cm long and 88 cm high, weighs 53.8 kg and has a lock to protect children. Just turn on the reset in the socket for it to work. It also has a mobile app that allows functions such as starting and stopping the cycle remotely, being notified when filters need to be changed and when the cycle is complete, and activation of the anti-child control.
A composting cycle should be done as soon as the food remains complete the specific compartment for this purpose - which should take about a week - but it is possible to carry out the process even daily. Once started, automatic composting lasts 24 hours and can only be stopped for the first 30 minutes to add more waste.
Additives are used every full cycle of reset. The device also has a filter designed to reduce odors - it is made of carbon and layers of HEPA (technology used in air filters with high efficiency in separating particles) - it lasts for two months. The refills of additives and filters will be made available by the company upon payment.
Other options
The object is not yet available for purchase outside the United States (it costs $999 there), but it will certainly soon happen.In the meantime, you can use another automatic composter model, the Decomposer 2. It is also possible to go on to traditional vermicomposting, with domestic composters.
