Discover complementary treatments for head lice

Tea tree oil, vinegar and liquid soap can be effective

Treatment is natural and fights head lice

If you ever had an itchy head as a child, it is quite possible that you experienced a lice infestation. This parasitic insect, which does not fly or jump, loves children's hair, but it can attack the hair of grown-ups too.

The most common drugs for treatment are losing their effect due to misuse, which causes surviving generations of the insect to reproduce, giving rise to resistant lice. Therefore, it may be interesting to carry out alternative treatments after following the instructions indicated by your doctor (however, this should take place at least two days later, because before that you cannot wash your hair).

Tip: for cases of insect infestations, such as lice and fleas, you can tell the doctor that you prefer medicines from the pyrethrins class, as they are biodegradable.

Here are some simple and homemade forms of natural head lice treatment:

essential oil of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea tree essential oil (also known as tea tree), in addition to having many medicinal properties, it is an excellent natural insecticide. Add ten to 15 drops to every 60 ml of shampoo to use until the lice disappear.

There is also a natural way to use the oil to prevent infestations. Put 10 drops of the oil in a spray of 100 ml of water. Two sprays before applying the styling cream or gel are enough to keep lice out.

Attention: it is very important to take a test to verify that you are not allergic to tea tree oil before using it. Apply a drop of oil dissolved in 10 ml of water to the skin of your arm and wait to see if you don't have itching or burning sensation, which are the most common symptoms. Do not use more than the recommended amount or you may become intoxicated.

Liquid soap

Apply neutral liquid soap to the hair, remove the excess with a comb and dry completely with a blow-dryer. This will create a layer over the lice that will suffocate them. The procedure must be done before bedtime, as the lice can go up to eight hours without breathing (which is why the trick of leaving mayonnaise in the hair for an hour doesn't work). When you wake up, wash your hair and bedding. Repeat the process once or twice a week.

Vinegar

To remove the nits, the egg deposited by the louse, prepare a solution with one part vinegar to one part water. Dip a piece of cotton into the mixture to apply it to the child's hair as follows:

  • Choose three or four strands of hair with nits;
  • Wrap these threads with soaked cotton and pull slowly, from the root to the ends of the threads, holding the root so as not to hurt the child;
  • Have another bottle with the same vinegar mixture to discard the cottons in it when necessary.

Basic care

To prevent the spread of lice, it is important to take certain steps:

  • Do not share personal items such as pillows, caps, combs, barrettes;
  • Boil the parasitized person's bedding before treatment to avoid reinfestation (since there will still be eggs and juvenile forms of the insect on pillowcases, sheets and blankets);
  • When combing, place a white cloth so that the lice fall there rather than on your clothing;
  • Gently notify nearby people when you identify a lice infestation, so that treatment can be done.
