Brush and paint roller can be sustainably cleaned

Check out the possible procedures

After doing a renovation or painting small objects, such as tables and chairs, the question remains: how to wash the brush or paint roller without harming the environment with toxic residues?

The concern is well founded, as paints, solvents and varnishes can contain toxic substances that contaminate the soil and water and are not recyclable. To clean painting tools in a sustainable way, a series of procedures is necessary. Track and understand how to sustainably clean brushes and paint rollers:

Dry cleaning

Use a piece of old cloth to clean the brush. Squeeze the bristles (brush threads) between layers of fabric and continue rubbing until no more paint comes out of the object.

If using paint rollers, get rid of excess paint by running the roller over a clean surface. Scrape the rest with a sharp object until you have removed most of the residue. Next, dispose of the scraped dry ink as non-recyclable waste.

washing

If your tools are very dirty and the above options weren't enough, another option is to wash them. But this is no ordinary washing. Follow the step-by-step:

  • Take a bucket of about four liters of water and wash the brush or roller inside. In the case of the brush, dry it on a clean piece of fabric;
  • Take a second bucket of the same amount of water, rinse the brush or roller again to remove virtually any traces of paint. Repeat the operation of cleaning excess paint from the brush using a clean cloth;
  • Wash the brush and/or roller under running water. If water is still coming out dirty, it is recommended to rinse the tools a third time in any of the buckets;
  • Reserve the bucket of cleaner water to use again - for the same purpose. The ink will settle to the bottom of the container after a while;
  • Pour the contents of the bucket with the dirtiest water into a container that holds about 20 liters. Leave in a warm place, covered with a cloth (to prevent insect larvae) and dry and wait for the water to evaporate;
  • After total evaporation, scrape the dry paint residue from the bottom of the bucket and dispose of this residue as non-recyclable waste.
