Bom Retiro stores may donate scraps for recycling
Sinditêxtil-SP launches “Retalho Fashion” project, which counts on cooperatives and collectors to collect textile waste
The Bom Retiro neighborhood, in São Paulo, is known for its variety of clothing stores. About 1200 garment factories are installed in the region. With so much trade turned to the textile market, a lot of raw material ends up being wasted.
With this in mind, Sinditêxtil-SP launched the Retail Fashion program, in a ceremony that brought together authorities and businessmen in the sector at the end of June 2012.
The program is environmentally and socially concerned and aims to manage textile waste in the Bom Retiro neighborhood. The project will collect scraps and fabric scraps from stores in the region with the help of cooperatives and scavengers who will take the collected material to recycling industries. These companies recycled fabrics and scraps, thus making strings, new threads, blankets, blankets, inputs for car linings, etc.
The project is still in its initial phase and the expectation is that it will be fully operational by 2014. If it works out, it could be a way to reverse the situation of rag imports in Brazil. Currently, the country produces 175,000 tons, with 90% of the total not being used. On the other hand, 13 thousand tons of scraps are imported from other countries for use on national soil, according to Sinditêxtil-SP.
Retail Fashion is a pioneering action that aims to raise awareness among entrepreneurs in the textile and apparel market for the validity of the National Policy on Solid Waste (PNRS), which comes into force in 2014. The implementation of the program has three stages: diagnosis of the region , mobilization of companies, execution planning, survey of the necessary infrastructure for the demand and application of the project.
Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Sindivest-SP, Bom Retiro Chamber of Store Directors and Senai are partners that collaborate with the program. Check out the video about the project launch below:
