Homemade rosemary oil is often confused with rosemary essential oil, but the two are very different. Rosemary essential oil is pure and carries the benefits of rosemary in a concentrated way. To learn more about it, take a look at the article: "What is rosemary essential oil for?".
Both rosemary essential oil and homemade rosemary oil are beneficial to health and can be used in cooking and cosmetics.
How to Make Homemade Rosemary Oil
Unlike rosemary essential oil, rosemary oil can be made at home and it is very easy to prepare. Just heat a few sprigs of fresh rosemary in your favorite oil (it can be olive oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil, among others). However, keep in mind that this oil must be used within a week - otherwise it may become rancid. To prepare rosemary oil that lasts longer on the shelf, use dried rosemary sprigs. The dried rosemary should be mixed with the chosen oil and placed in a canning jar in a sunny place. In this way, the infusion will take place slowly. In this method pre-packaged dried rosemary or homemade dried rosemary can be used.
fresh rosemary oil
- Three or four sprigs of fresh rosemary;
- Two cups (475 ml) of oil (olive oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, etc).
dried rosemary oil
- Three or four sprigs of dried rosemary (the equivalent of a large tablespoon);
- About two cups (475 ml) of your preferred oil.
Rosemary benefits
Rosemary has chemical compounds that provide antioxidant, relaxing and pharmacological actions. The substances present in rosemary can activate peripheral circulation and act as anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, studies have shown that rosemary extract can prevent cancer cell replication and improve memory.
Homemade rosemary oil can be used in the kitchen and is not contraindicated if consumed in moderation.
However, the therapeutic benefits of rosemary are best enjoyed in the essential oil format, as the essential oil concentrates more strongly the active ingredients of rosemary.
Hair
Rosemary essential oil can be used to treat oily hair and also has anti-dandruff functions, serving as a hair tonic. When used in shampoos and conditioners, it usually adds shine to the hair.
