Most women begin experiencing premenopausal symptoms between the ages of 40 and 50, although it can occur earlier in some cases.
Menopause is marked by the natural absence of the menstrual cycle for a period of 12 consecutive months. It is also a time of slow decrease in the amount of hormones produced by the woman. During menopause, the balance between the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone changes, which causes symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings to appear. These symptoms begin to lessen as menopause matures.
