A sty, also called a hordeolum, is an inflammation of the eye caused by the clogging of the eyelash glands with fat. It can also occur due to bacterial infections - most of the time, this is due to a bacteria called a staphylococci, forming a swollen and red spot, very painful and with pus inside.

Stys in the eye can occur on the outer or inner parts of the eyelid, but neither type of stye is contagious. The appearance of a sty may mean that your immunity is low, but the treatment is simple.

stye causes

In addition to the bacteria mentioned above, the sty can be caused by poor hygiene, excessive use of makeup or the act of rubbing your eyes frequently. A sty in pregnancy is also common, as hormonal changes can generally increase the production of fat by the eyelid glands.

Adolescents are prone to have a sty because of the hormonal variation characteristic of age, while in children the most common cause is the fact that the little ones scratch their eyes a lot with dirty hands.

Symptoms

The characteristic symptoms of sty are:

  • Eye pain;
  • Difficulty opening the eye;
  • Eyelid swelling;
  • Local redness;
  • Eye watering.
The sty usually matures and bursts over a period of four to five days, disappearing on its own within two weeks. If not treated properly, it can reappear.

sty prevention

  • Do not use old cosmetics and avoid sharing your cosmetics and beauty products (styes are not contagious, but third-party products and cosmetics may contain bacteria and dirt that is harmful to you);
  • Wash your hands regularly;
  • Before putting on contact lenses, sanitize them well and wash your hands;
  • Always remove makeup before bed;
  • Clean your eyes when you wake up.

Sty treatment

If the sty is internal, see an ophthalmologist immediately as he/she will recommend antibiotics for the treatment of the sty and in some cases surgical drainage may be necessary. In addition to the medical treatment indicated, you can also take care of the sty at home - clean your eyes using baby shampoo to remove all secretions without forcing or squeezing.

You can also make cold compresses from chamomile tea, green tea or black tea. Clean from the outer edge to the inner edge so the pus does not spread all over the eye.

In the case of external sty, it is possible that it disappears only with the home treatments described above, but if it does not heal in a week, look for a health professional to get an indication of the best remedy for sty in your case. As low immunity favors the appearance of the sty, try to eat well to strengthen your immune system.
