Concentrated cleaning products are more sustainable options
Because there is less expense on raw material and transport, concentrated cleaning products avoid unnecessary packaging and waste
Manufacturers of washing powder, detergents, fabric softeners and other products related to household and clothing cleaning have started to invest in concentrated materials and refills, to avoid the environmental and financial expense with large packages and transportation.
This type of material has the same effect and much lower environmental costs by using less raw material in its composition.
However, many consumers are still used to the old versions and prefer the convenience of not having to change the packaging content.
Benefits
Less water is used in the production of concentrates, and because they are lighter, energy is saved compared to transporting a larger object.
Concentrated products reduce the amount of new plastic in the environment as well as the incorrect disposal of these containers when they are empty. Concentrates also help to reduce the amount of leftovers.
The US Environmental Protection Agency claims that these sustainable products are not only important tools against waste, but that they can also provide financial savings for the consumers and businesses behind the products.
Companies save financially on raw materials and transport costs when their products have less packaging. And this savings can be passed on to consumers (even though this may not happen in the Brazilian reality), who see their money as having more value when they buy something that can be recharged, rather than completely replaced.
With their obvious environmental and economic benefits, it seems hard to believe that some of the concentrated cleaning options have taken so long to gain consumer acceptance. Still, the industry beckons with new options to the market.
