Greenk Movement holds 2nd edition of Greenk Show
Festival that brings together technology and sustainability aims to collect ten tons of electronic waste in three days
Created to raise awareness and mobilize people about the importance of correctly disposing of electronic waste, the Greenk Movement announced the 2nd edition of the Greenk Tech Show, the largest technology and sustainability festival in Brazil. The event will be held on the 25th, 26th and 27th of May at the Anhembi Exhibition Pavilion.
If in last year's edition, held at the Ibirapuera Bienal, the event collected 2.7 tons of e-waste (a record in the country), for this year the organizers intend to reach an even more ambitious goal: to collect ten tons of e-waste (electronic waste) of the so-called green and brown lines (computers, smartphones, tablets, wires, batteries, chargers, monitors, TV and radio devices, among others), a world record. “We bet on the diversity of attractions to draw the attention of the whole family to the importance of correctly disposing of e-waste”, explains Fernando Perfeito, CEO of the event.
To summon the "greenks" of all generations, the presence of e-Sports Zone By ESL has already been confirmed, which will be organized by ESL Brasil, where professional championships will be held with the presence of teams, show matches of the Intercollegial Greenk Tournament and multiplatform championships with public participation. Another highlight will be the Drone Zone by MiranteLab (experimentation platform formed by representatives of the maker culture), where the public can go through the experience of piloting a drone, follow a race with professional pilots and even learn how to assemble their own drone, in workshops.
The unprecedented Greenk Intercollegiate Tournament will bring together around 100,000 students from public and private schools, promoting e-sports championships among students, presentations related to technology and sustainability and, at the end, will consecrate the school that captures the greatest amount of e-waste .
The Greenk Tech Show Geek Arena will feature top digital influencers in fun presentations, as well as plenty of geek content. At the Knowledge and Innovation Arena, visitors will be able to attend lectures and presentations by prominent entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs in the new economy, talking about sustainability, startups and encouraging science and technology education.
Digital inclusion
As in the previous edition, everyone who takes their e-waste for disposal at the Greenk Tech Show pays only half a ticket. “We are the only event that brings together technology and various attractions for an environmental purpose. We want society as a whole to be engaged in the challenge of correctly disposing of electronic waste”, explains Perfeito.
With numerous highly toxic chemical components, such as aluminum, mercury, mist, lead, among others, e-waste, if improperly disposed of, can contaminate soils and groundwater, causing an enormous risk to health. On the other hand, if disposed of correctly, almost all e-waste can return to the industry as raw material for manufacturing new equipment, following the rules of reverse logistics and Circular Economy.
- What is Circular Economy?
According to a UN report, Brazil is the second largest e-waste producer in the Americas (after only the United States), and the seventh largest in the world, with more than 1.5 million tons generated per year. Currently, only 3% of this total is correctly disposed of, against 36% in Mexico and 22% in the US, for example. The countries that lead the correct disposal of electronic waste in the world are Switzerland and Norway with 74%.
With the inevitable growth in the presence of technology in our daily lives, and the continuous release of innovations in the industry, the scenario becomes even more worrying not only in Brazil, but all over the world.
All e-waste collected by the Greenk Tech Show will be collected by companies accredited by Green Eletron, Manager for Waste Electronic Equipment and by ABRIN (Brazilian Association of Recycling and Innovation). After sorting, the e-waste in condition of reconditioning will be sent to the Computer Reconditioning Centers (CRCs), which are part of the Digital Inclusion Program and Policy of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC).
Thanks to the partnership between the Greenk Movement, MCTIC and the City of São Paulo, the refurbished computers, in perfect condition, will be donated to municipal public schools. Equipment that cannot be reconditioned will be properly disposed of, returning as raw material to the industry.
