Goodwell: the sustainable toothbrush that doesn't need to be changed

Only compostable attachments need replacing, but they don't pollute the environment.

Goodwell: the sustainable toothbrush

According to experts, a toothbrush should be changed every three months. Human beings have an average life expectancy of 75 years. There are 300 toothbrushes that will be replaced per inhabitant and five kilos of discarded plastic per person. Taking this contained to world proportions, we currently discard about 36 billion kilos of plastic brushes. That's too plastic! And, although there are hygiene issues involved, it is part of the so-called programmed obsolescence, a market tool in which the producer purposely creates a product that becomes obsolete or unusable after a certain period, so that the consumer needs to make another purchase of a similar item.

To avoid wasting plastic, the Americans Patrick Triato and Aaron Feiger created Goodwell, a sustainable toothbrush with compostable bristles and much more durable.

The idea is very simple and smart. The permanent part of the brush is a resistant aluminum tube that allows the joining, at one of its ends, of compostable attachments. In this way, the user can easily connect to the handle a brush head, a tongue cleaner or a flosser (item that aids in the application of dental floss).

As the attachments are made from a bamboo composite material, they can be disposed of in common trash or buried in the backyard without any problems, as all parts are biodegradable.

There are optional attachments that don't have much to do with oral hygiene, such as conventional cutlery and even the chopstick Eastern; the team promises to develop more news.

Goodwell Kit

The metal tube can store different objects such as toothpicks and small pills. In addition to all this, the toothbrush has a microcontroller that captures oral hygiene activities for the user to check on the website or via cell phone application - a tip for parents who want to know if their children are brushing their teeth properly.
