Computers should not be thrown away in the common trash. They have several parts with chemical residues that cause problems when they come into direct contact with the environment and, more specifically, with humans. According to the specialist in environmental management at the Center for Disposal and Reuse of Computer Waste (Cedir), belonging to the Electronic Computing Center (CEE) of the University of São Paulo (USP), Neuci Bicov, any product that has a battery, electronic board or wire has some contaminating material. The main toxic elements present in computers are mercury (deteriorates the nervous system, causes motor and sensory disturbances, tremors and dementia), lead (causes genetic alterations, attacks the nervous system, bone marrow and kidneys, in addition to causing cancer ), cadmium (causes lung and prostate cancer, anemia and osteoporosis) and beryllium (causes lung cancer). These materials are cumulative. The more contact you have with them, the worse your health.

When dealing with environmental problems related to electronics, the severity increases due to the amount of waste generated. According to a survey carried out by the United Nations (UN - UN university research link, 2010), the generation of electronic waste is growing at a rate of approximately 40 million tons per year, all over the world. Most of this waste is able to be used again or recycled, but the destination ends up being the worst possible: landfills and dumps.

options

Are you sure your computer no longer works? Do you really need another one? Is it possible to fix it?

Try to use your computer until the end of its useful life. If you choose to exchange it, make a donation or sell it via the internet. Some charities and telecenters accept electronics in good condition, but stay tuned to find out how the final disposal of the product is carried out after the end of its useful life!

If there is no further repair, send your old computer for recycling. A large part of electronic components is recyclable, which guarantees the reuse of 80% of plastic materials and metals. Another option is to return the PC to the manufacturer who will be responsible for the correct disposal, thanks to the reverse logistics policy provided for by the Solid Waste Law, which is fully in force in the country.

Disposing of computers in a conscientious manner is important both for recycling and to avoid possible contamination from contaminating materials. eCycle gives you a hand on this with the Recycling Stations section. Or you can take advantage of our waste collection service at your home. But remember, always opt for conscientious disposal, respecting the environment!

Do you want to dispose of your object with a clear conscience and without leaving the house?
