In Brazil, Arbor Day is celebrated on September 21, the date that marks the beginning of spring in the southern hemisphere. In line with the date, the Annual Tree Festival was instituted nationwide by Federal Decree No. 55,795, February 24, 1965, to create a national version of "Arbor Day", which is celebrated worldwide on March 21 (the northern hemisphere spring equinox).

Due to the physiographic-climatic differences in Brazil, the Annual Tree Festival is celebrated on different dates in different states. In the states of Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia and the Federal Territories of Amapá, Roraima, Fernando de Noronha and Rondônia, the Annual Tree Festival is celebrated in the first week of March.

In the states of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara; Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District, the commemoration is on September 21st.

Even so, the commemoration of Arbor Day on September 21 remained with some autonomy from the officially established date. As this is an important issue, a day just to remember the trees seems to be more and more necessary.

goal

The Annual Tree Festival aims to sensitize the population to the importance of preserving trees for the balance of the environment, including their ecosystem services. To find out what ecosystem services are, take a look at the article: "What are ecosystem services? Understand."
