Sodium bicarbonate formula

Baking soda is well known for its many uses and benefits for everyday life - it is a great item to have at home as it can be used for almost anything: relieving heartburn, treating thrush, preparing chocolate cake recipes, and others, cleaning silver, making natural cleaning products and cosmetics, and treating minor health problems. Little remembered (or even unknown), the formula for sodium bicarbonate is NaHCO3 and indicates its chemical composition: one atom of sodium, one of carbon, three of oxygen and one of hydrogen.

Also known as sodium hydrogen carbonate and acid sodium carbonate, bicarbonate is an alkaline salt that appears as a white or slightly pink crystalline solid. It is classified as a salt because it is highly soluble in water, but when heated to more than 50°C, it begins to decompose, releasing carbon dioxide (CO2).

The ancient Egyptians already knew the benefits of baking soda and used it as a soap for hygiene and cleaning purposes. Later, this and other peoples used it as a yeast for bread. However, like all products, you must be careful and use the bicarbonate in the right way and in the recommended doses, since incorrect use can be harmful.

Bicarbonate is considered a neutralizing agent, that is, it helps to reduce both alkalinity and acidity. Salt acts by neutralizing the medium to the nearest pH (hydrogen potential) 7, which is the neutral value on a scale ranging from 0 to 14 - values below 7 are considered acidic and values above 7 are basic (alkaline). ). Water, for example, is a neutral compound and its pH varies between 6.8 and 7.2. Learn more about pH and learn how to make a homemade pH meter in the article "Do it yourself: pH meter".

In addition, baking soda also serves to delay changes in pH balance, which also makes it known in chemistry as a buffering agent. This dual capacity to neutralize and buffer are the most striking properties of the formula, which allow it to act on more than 80 tips for homemade solutions - it has everything from sore throat relief to cleaning the car battery.
