Sesame is an oilseed of the genus Sesamum, which has 36 species, the best known and most commercial being the Sesamum indicum L. Having an excellent adaptation in tropical regions, sesame is cultivated in more than 71 countries, mainly in the Asian and African continents, which represent 60% of world production. Many believe that sesame was cultivated in Babylon and Assyria four thousand years ago - making it one of the oldest known cultures in the world. Sesame has easy adaptation in semiarid soil, having considerable economic value for regions where agriculture is hampered by having soil with few nutrients. Check out its benefits in the article: "Benefits of sesame".

But who has never had a sesame bun? Sesame is widely used in the food industry, mainly for the manufacture of bread, and in the biscuit and candy industry. However, much of the production of sesame is aimed at the manufacture of vegetable oil and biofuel, due to its high oil content: 52% (by mass).

sesame oil

Sesame oil is extracted through the cold pressing process of the sesame seeds. They go through a physical compressor that extracts the oil without changing the temperature or adding solvents, resulting in a cake (pomace resulting from oil seeds), rich in fiber, and in oil, which is then filtered and refined, leaving a yellowish color.

Sesame oil has a high stability and is not easily rancid thanks to its composition. Oil contains lignins, sesamolin, sesamine, vitamins A, B, C and E and a high content of unsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic and linoleic acid, known as omega 9 and omega 6). Through the decomposition of sesamolin, sesamol and sesamin are formed, which act as antioxidants and are responsible for the stability of the oil.

The presence of sesamin and lignans can contribute to accelerating the breakdown of alcohol in the liver, in addition to presenting antihypertensive, immunoregulatory, anticarcinogenic activities, among others. Sesame oil is edible and can be used in cooking as a seasoning, but its current focus of production is linked to biofuel.

Thanks to the presence of compounds with high antioxidant potential, sesame oil can bring several benefits, both for the internal organism, through ingestion, and for the external organism (body and hair), allowing its application in cosmetics and even pharmaceuticals. In addition to its high antioxidant power, sesame oil can have several properties, such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory action;
  • Decrease in blood pressure;
  • Hydration and softness;
  • Anti aging;
  • Protection from UV rays.

With these properties, sesame oil can be applied to maintain, protect and moisturize the skin and hair.

care

Because sesame oil has a significant blood pressure lowering effect, consult your doctor before adding sesame oil to your diet to avoid further complications due to this effect.

Sesame oil is one of the best vegetable oils available, providing health benefits through its use in cooking and cosmetics. However, before using it, make sure that the product is 100% natural and pure, free from components that could be harmful to health. Many products that contain sesame oil may have harmful substances, such as parabens, introduced to improve some physical aspect of the product and even its lifespan.

You can find different types of 100% natural and pure oils at eCycle store.

discard

The improper disposal of oils causes serious environmental impacts, mainly in terms of water contamination. Thus, the disposal of vegetable oils in drains and sinks is inadequate, as it can cause several environmental risks and also clog the pipes. Therefore, in case of disposal, look for the correct location for these products, place the oil residues in a plastic container and take them to a disposal point so that the oil can be recycled.

Find the nearest point to discard them. You can also use used oil to make high quality soap.
