Philips launches light bulb that lasts up to 20 years

The company was the winner of a contest held by the US government

Imagine a lamp that lasts about 20 years, brings less damage to the environment, is more economical and produced with materials that can be recycled. Well, know that it not only already exists, but is on sale in the American market. It is the 10 watt LED lamp from Philips, which was the winner of the "Bright Tomorrow" (Billiard Tomorrow) contest, held by the US government to think of alternatives to the old 60 watt incandescent lamp. The company award was $10 million.

To increase efficiency and decrease energy consumption, the lamp's filaments were replaced by light-emitting diodes, better known as LEDs. With replacement, the product's useful life can last about 20 years, but, on the other hand, it makes it more expensive. The suggested price by Philips is U$ 60 (about R$ 110).

Taking into account the high cost, Philips is subsidizing the lamp in some US stores. With this, it can be sold for up to U$ 20 (R$ 35). Even though it is more expensive, the winning lamp in the competition can bring savings to consumers, as it uses less energy and has a longer useful life, in addition to being able to reduce carbon emissions by up to 5.6 million metric tons per year in a country like the United States.

Check out some of the prerequisites that the lamp had to pass:

- Efficiency of more than 60 lumens per watt, in addition to surpassing the efficiency of all incandescent and compact fluorescent sources that today range from 10 to 60 lumens per watt;

- Power consumption less than 10 watts;

- Output of more than 900 lumens, equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent lamp;

- Lifetime greater than 25 thousand hours, 25 times longer than a common lamp;

- Color Rendering Index (CRI) greater than 90, which is a measure of high lighting quality;

- Color Temperature between 2700-3000 Kelvin, which is white light comparable to incandescent.
