What to do in case of accidents with lubricating oil?

Several situations arising from its misuse can lead to problems

Used or contaminated lubricating oils can cause many problems for human health and the environment (see more here). But you need to know what to do in case of an accident with lubricating oil.

First aid

If the problem is related to an oil contact with humans, the first thing to be done is to contact the nearest hospital. However, if the case is serious and something needs to be done improvised, carefully follow the tips below, depending on the situation:

Fire

If there is a large fire, first isolate the area and remove people from the area. But don't play the hero. Call the fire department immediately. And if there are victims, provide first aid and contact medical assistance.

But if you find only the beginning of fire or small outbreaks, a person with adequate training can control it with fire extinguishers (CO 2 / chemical powder).

Environmental protection measure

In the event of an eventual spill or leak, isolate the area and remove people from the area. Then eliminate or distance possible sources of fire, such as flames, heat, sparks, sparks, sparks. Finally, protect courses, water bodies and sewer and drainage networks. Remember never to direct spilled material into these locations.

Always try to restrict the affected area with the use of absorbent barriers, rags, fabrics, sand, or sawdust. Once this is done, you will have more time to try to stop the leak.

If the soil, courses and bodies of water, sewerage or drainage are affected, notify the local environmental agency immediately.

To clean up spilled oil, try to recover as much of the spilled material by pumping it into a properly labeled container. Use absorbent material and avoid using water or solvents for cleaning. Collect all materials that come in contact with the lubricant, store them in suitable containers, and label them. Finally, send them to recycling or hazardous waste landfill.

If you don't know where to discard, visit our Recycle Everything section and find out where to dispose of used or contaminated lubricating oil.
