Compact fluorescent is an economical and efficient option

However, consumers should be aware of the hazardous materials that make it up, especially at the time of disposal

Fluorescent lamp

The compact fluorescent lamp was created to replace the incandescent one, known for the "yellow light" and the heat that emanates when lit. With longer service life and up to four times more energy efficient compared to incandescent. Aiming at greater energy efficiency, the Ministries of Mines and Energy, Science and Technology, and Industry and Commerce decided to discontinue the production of incandescents as of 2016 (see more here).

However, these lamps have two problems. The first is its disposal, as it is a material with complicated disposal due to the heavy metal mercury, one of the main components of the lamp. Few places receive this type of waste for the proper decontamination of the item.

The second problem again has to do with mercury. This is because, if the lamp is handled in a dangerous way and breaks, the heavy metal can cause several serious problems to human health (see more here). However, there is a tendency for there to be an ever greater reduction in the use of mercury for this type of lamp. According to the engineer of the manufacturer FLC, all materials harmful to the environment must be reduced in the future (see more here).

While LED lamps, more efficient and recyclable, do not hit the market with force, fluorescent ones are a good option. Follow below how to proceed to exchange in your home:

Get to know fluorescent lamps

CFLs work like this: Electric current is used to excite a bright phosphor coating located inside the bulb. In this process, energy dissipation is small (see more here);

Decide where to put them

They should not be used in areas where they are switched on and off too often. For example: if your luminaire is turned on and off more than 20 times in a period of one day, its lifetime will be reduced. If you have a dimmer (light intensity controller) at home and want to install fluorescents, be sure to purchase specific models;

Choose the style of your fluorescent

Unlike incandescents, you can choose the shape, size, temperature, color, level and brightness of your fluorescent. Also check out the design implications of bulbs to decide which bulb features are right for you;

go shopping

It's time to buy your compact fluorescent lamps. You can find several models in specialized lamp stores or supermarkets.

To find the correct destination for your old lamp, go to the Recycling Stations section of eCycle, select "light bulbs" and find the location closest to you.
