Ambev launches the country's first canned water

The company bets on reducing the use of plastic and invests in aluminum, a 100% recyclable material

Canned water

Ambev announced this week an innovation in the national mineral water market. AMA, a pioneer brand in creating a social business in the country and which allocates 100% of its profits to expand access to drinking water, now presents its new version: the first water in a can in Brazil.

Aluminum packaging is more sustainable, as in addition to helping to reduce the use of plastic, it is made with 100% recyclable material.

In 2017, 97.3% of aluminum cans for beverages were recycled in Brazil – the highest rate in the world, according to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) and the Brazilian Aluminum Association (Abal). The numbers encouraged the release of water in cans.

According to Richard Lee, head of sustainability at Ambev, in an interview with Reuters, “the canned version of AMA is an innovation in the Brazilian market and is another option for consumers who, in addition to staying hydrated, will be able to help the environment and people who live without access to drinking water”, he explains.

Launched in 2017, Água AMA has already raised more than BRL 3.5 million in profit, an amount fully reverted to 31 projects for access to drinking water, in the nine states of the Brazilian semiarid region, benefiting more than 29 thousand people. The goal is to end 2019 with 50 projects and 43 thousand people benefited.
