Campaign portrays animals amidst human-produced garbage

Garbage generated in a careless way on a daily basis can be harmful to different types of animals

Almost everything we buy today comes in a bag, bottle, box or package that will be immediately discarded as soon as we open the package. However, the fact that this garbage soon leaves our field of vision does not mean that it has disappeared. On the contrary, it all ends up in our oceans, landfills, forests and more, resulting in major environmental problems.

With over 300 million tons of plastic produced and approximately 8.8 million of them being dumped into the oceans each year, it's clear that our products and packaging have nothing to do with disposables.

All this garbage not only impacts the quality of human life in the form of piles of garbage, but also enormously harms animals. When it comes to plastic, there are about 700 marine species currently facing the risk of extinction due to entanglement, pollution and ingestion of these materials (see more here and here). And while plastic makes up 80% of the garbage that currently floats in the oceans, it's impossible to deny that it can be found clogging up many other open spaces in the world.

Reducing the amount of waste is a constant challenge - both in public policies and in individual attitudes (such as avoiding bags, packages and making domestic compost). In an effort to make people aware of their waste-generating habits and encourage reduction, the UK supermarket chain Lidl UK, in collaboration with photographer Chris Peckham, has launched an incredible campaign showing the effects of our litter on animal life.

The company will donate more than 500,000 pounds of its profits to an initiative to produce bags for permanent use and environmental re-education, in a project in partnership with the company Keep Britain Tidy. Check out the amazing and shocking images:
