the girl who hugs the wind

The book The girl hugging the wind - the story of a Congolese refugee , written by Fernanda Paraguassu and published by Editora Voo , presents, in a light and sensitive way, the theme of refuge for children, helping to create empathy and promote the welcome of those who arrive in a new country. The book is part of the project One by one, which will allocate part of the income obtained from the sale of each book to a refugee assistance program.

The girl hugging the wind – the story of a Congolese refugee is a children's book with a sweet and light narrative about the story of Mersene, a little girl who had to separate from part of her family to escape the sad conflict experienced in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While adapting to her new life in Brazil, she creates a game to get around her homesickness.

Mersene's story was inspired by the true stories of several Congolese girls who were refugees in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was in contact with refugee families that the author Fernanda Paraguassu observed the touching capacity of these children to overcome pain and homesickness.

“You have to dream to deal with losses and pain. Away from home and family, a beautiful girl uses her imagination to seek the affection that was left behind. In this book, Fernanda Paraguassu found in facts witnessed by her the image of an embrace that could very well be used as a metaphor. In fact, it's just a simple and emotional account of a child's game.” – Carlos de Lannoy, journalist.

What does it mean for a child to flee from their own country, to abandon their home, family, friends and school due to conflict? And for the child who starts to live with a friend who came from abroad because he had to flee his home and needs to learn a new language? How can I help you? And what news does he bring about your culture? Your language, your music, your food, your games? What are the diferences? And the similarities?

More than introducing children to the theme of refuge, the girl who hugs the wind it makes room for the awakening of empathy. For the author, by approaching the unknown, with a curious and sensitive look, we can help make Brazil a more welcoming country. And children are, without a doubt, the path to this transformation.
