Why is Copenhagen a green capital?

The Danish capital is considered one of the main sustainable cities in the world due to several aspects.

Copenhagen

City of bicycles, sustainable city, model city, green capital. All these names are characteristic of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The municipality has an investment in sustainable means of transport, which improves the quality of life of its inhabitants. But not only that. Here are some other reasons:

Pockt Parks:

The Pocket Parks wave started there. It is the reuse of little used public places, such as street corners, to make a small park, measuring about 5 thousand square meters. They serve as more green space to rest in the midst of routine. The goal is that by 2015, there will be 14 across the city.

Chlorine-free water:

Copenhagen also provides its citizens with water that does not contain chlorine.

Organic food:

In 2011, 68% of the food served in the kitchens and cafeterias of municipal institutions was organic. The goal is for 90% of the food served in the city's kitchens and cafeterias to be organic by 2015.

Green management:

In Copenhagen, six of the seven municipal departments (representing two-thirds of employees) have certified environmental management systems.

Greenhouse gas reduction:

A climate change plan for the city was drawn up, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% (compared to 2005) by 2015. The plan also provides for the city to be carbon neutral by 2025.

Bike City:

Today, the city has a total of 338 km of bicycle paths arranged in flat, well-signposted streets, special parking lots and even exclusive bridges, and the city has 37% of the population taking up this type of transport. However, the plan is to convince 50% of the population to adopt the bicycle as an official vehicle by 2015.

Innovations for cyclists:

As there are many people cycling there, innovations are created to improve the lives of cyclists. One of them was the suspended cycle path called Cykelslangen (see more), but there are many others. Take a look at the video below to check it out:

All of this led to the city being voted the greenest in Europe, according to a survey carried out by Economist Intelligence Unit.
