But what differentiates alkaline water from ordinary water is that alkaline is mainly made up of more basic minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iron. This means that, unlike ordinary waters that have a neutral pH, it is less acidic. In other words, it has a higher pH.

It has been claimed that maintaining an alkaline diet makes it possible to cure many ailments, including bone diseases such as osteoporosis, and even cancer. However, there is insufficient evidence to support these claims. On the other hand, a study published by PubMed claims that the alkaline diet can have a number of health benefits.   • Increasing the number of fruits and vegetables included in an alkaline diet would improve the potassium/sodium ratio, which could benefit bone health and reduce muscle loss, as well as mitigate other chronic diseases such as hypertension and stroke;
  • An alkaline diet would result in an increase in growth hormone, which can improve many cardiovascular health outcomes, is good for memory and cognition;
  • An increase in intracellular magnesium (an alkalizing nutrient), which is necessary for the function of many enzyme systems, is another added benefit of the alkaline diet. Magnesium is needed to activate vitamin D and its increase, therefore, improves the concentration of this vitamin;
  • Alkalinity may result in additional benefit for some chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher, i.e., more alkaline, pH.

According to the study itself, based on the above statements, it would be necessary to consider an alkaline diet to reduce morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases.

According to the study, one of the first considerations in an alkaline diet, which includes more fruits and vegetables, is knowing the type of soil in which the food was grown, as this can significantly influence the mineral content.

A study that analyzed patients who consumed and did not consume alkaline water concluded that those who consumed had an improvement in body acid/base balance and better general state of hydration.

Another study showed that drinking ionized alkaline water lowered blood pressure and blood sugar and fat levels. This means, according to the same study, that alkaline water can be used as one of the secondary therapeutic methods for high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia (disorders in fat levels).

A 2016 study of 100 people showed that drinking alkaline water, compared to drinking regular water, reduced blood viscosity. This means that alkaline water improves blood fluidity, which can increase oxygenation in the body as a whole.

Another study published by the platform PubMed concluded that the consumption of alkaline water has therapeutic benefits for reflux sufferers.

Natural or artificial alkaline water?

Natural alkaline water occurs when water passes over rocks and absorbs their minerals, which increases their alkaline level through enrichment with minerals. Another way to obtain natural alkaline water is via solarization. The sun causes acidifying minerals such as fluorine and chlorine to evaporate, leaving more alkaline minerals necessary for health such as magnesium and calcium.

Artificial alkaline water, on the other hand, is made from a demineralization process. The problem is that, according to a study published by the World Health Organization (WHO), consuming water with low mineral content (especially alkalizing) can bring health risks, such as loss of calcium, magnesium and other essential elements present in prepared foods with water.

So, if you choose, prefer natural alkaline water or the one that has been solarized. Because water alkalized through the subtraction or addition of minerals can impair nutrition or affect the kidneys.

Do not replace treatments

Despite the benefits, alkaline water is not miraculous and will not cure ailments on its own. Under no circumstances replace treatments with traditional medicines by the simple habit of drinking alkaline water.
