Learn how to make a seedbed with paper rolls

Something as simple as a roll of toilet paper, which would go to waste, can turn into a practical and inexpensive seedbed

Sowing

We have already commented on the importance of sowing and germination for your organic garden in the article "Organic gardens course #3 and #4: sowing, germination and seedling transplantation". Sowing is important when starting your garden or when making seedlings, so why not make a seedbed from materials you already have at home? Learn how to make a seedbed quickly and easily, reusing a waste as common as toilet paper rolls.

How to make a sowing

The video below brings the detailed step-by-step of two ways to make a sowing - the first is an eggshell sowing and the second is a toilet paper sowing. Both are simple and provide a friendly destination for these two common residues.

To transform toilet paper rolls into seedbeds is simple: just join them with scissors, earth, seeds and water. To start with, you need to separate the empty toilet paper rolls and cut them in half using scissors. Then, carefully press the outline of one of the ends to form the bottom, forming a small cup.

When finished, the bottom of your glass should look like this one:

Sowing is advisable for successful germination

Separate the “seeds” and arrange them all together, one next to the other, preferably on a tray or other support surface. Fill the pots with soil and place the seed of your choice in the center of each one. Water your seed daily. In a few days, your seeds will start to sprout.

When transplanting the sprouts to a garden, be careful to support the bottom of the cup with your hand, to prevent the soil from falling out of the seedbed (which by now should be a little soft due to the humidity).

It is not necessary to remove the toilet paper roll to plant, just place it directly under the soil, as it is biodegradable and will dissolve in the soil where your seedling is planted.
