Discover the $11,000 wooden bike
There are only 20 units worldwide
In addition to providing several health benefits, the bicycle has one big advantage over cars: the stark difference in prices. But every rule has its exception, right? In the case of bikes, it goes by the name of Arvak. Named after the horse in Norse mythology responsible for pulling the chariot of the goddess Sól, the bicycle is hand-built to the customer's exact specifications and benefits from the highest quality components. Weighing a modest 7.5 kg, the Arvak has limited production, with only twenty pieces available worldwide to date.
According to the bike's creators, designer Paule Guerin and carpenter Till Breitfuss, from the studio Keim, from France, to achieve a light and rigid product, the frame was made from vacuum lamination with 20 to 50 layers of sky tree leaves (Fraxinus americana) and resin modules. The saddle was imported from Italy and has no height adjustment, and the wheels are made of carbon fiber. There is only one gear and it makes very little noise. The design of geometric shapes made with wood is to return to the essence of pedaling, with greater integration between the user and the landscape.
The design firm also created Arvak's sister bicycle, the Alerion, in collaboration with renowned French sculptor Charles Boulnois, whose design was inspired by the hippogriffs and Pegasus.
The price of the unit is estimated at $11,000. Check out the video.
