HP Reinforces Planet Partners Program and Expands Partnership with Conservation International

Partnership reaffirms commitment to impact reduction and protection of biodiversity

HP Planet Partners

HP Inc. expands its global partnership with Conservation International by institutionally supporting the organization in Brazil. The announcement was made on the evening of October 4th in São Paulo, during the HP Planet Partners awards event, the HP branded cartridge and equipment collection and recycling program, which developed in Brazil a pioneering closed-loop process in the country, and taken as a reference in the industry for efforts towards the circular economy.

Present in more than 60 countries, Planet Partners has just recognized HP customers and partners that stood out in the program in Brazil. In addition to offering free recycling of the brand's products, the program is integrated into the local manufacturing chain, closing the cycle of reinserting recycled raw materials in the production of new products.

Through Planet Partners, HP reinforces its commitment to raising awareness of the importance of recycling and allocating resources to initiatives that contribute to the care and preservation of the environment such as partnering with Conservation International. Globally, HP and CI are already partners through the Amazônia Adentro initiative, a virtual reality film that allows the audience to immerse themselves in the Amazon and understand the importance of conserving it.

“HP recognizes its responsibility to protect the world's forests, which are vital to the planet's life. That's why we promote responsible printing solutions, as well as practices and policies that ensure that all HP branded paper and paper product packaging come from certified recyclable sources by 2020,” says Claudio Raupp, Brazil Managing Director from HP. “The work developed by CI in the Amazon is extremely relevant and, for this reason, we have expanded our partnership with the organization also in Brazil”, completes the executive.

“This partnership further strengthens the ties between HP and Conservation International in Brazil. And it is the first step for HP and other companies to join us in this great effort to restore and protect the Amazon”, says Rodrigo Medeiros, Vice President of CI-Brasil.

HP Planet Partners program results

In 2016, the global Planet Partners program was able to recycle more than 15,400 tonnes of HP toner cartridges, of which 0% was sent to landfill or incinerated. These results are testament to the unified effort of HP customers and partners who contribute to the goal of reducing environmental impact and carbon footprint

According to a worldwide life-cycle assessment (LCA) study of Four Elements Consulting 2016, in collaboration with HP, this closed-loop recycling program achieved a 54% reduction in fossil fuel consumption, which translates into savings of more than 120,000 barrels of oil, as well as a reduction of 33 % carbon footprint (equivalent to taking 4,125 cars out of circulation for a year) and 75% water, a percentage enough to supply 283 million homes for a day.

Likewise, 102,400 tons of computers and peripherals were recycled during the same period. “In Brazil, we have our Recycling and Innovation Center, where we collected and recycled more than 720 tons of end-of-life HP products in 2016,” says Kami Saidi, Latin America Supply Chain Director. “We have developed a reference Circular Economy ecosystem in the country, with closed-loop solutions. With this, we want to reach the goal of 25% recycled content in products manufactured in the country by next year”, completes the executive.
