What to do with frying oil?

A little oil can contaminate a lot of water, see the best reuse and disposal options

Its incorrect disposal can contaminate water and harm marine fauna and flora

Pastéizinhos, hamburgers, French fries and a nice soda: favorite combination of any child (and us adults too)! But after such a caloric afternoon, tossing used frying oil down the kitchen sink will add to your list of sins! A liter of household oil that goes down the drain can clog your house's pipes and still seriously damage the ecosystem, contaminating at once a million liters of water, an amount consumed by a human being in 14 years of use. Furthermore, disposal in the sink can attract animals such as rats, insects and cockroaches to the sewage.

If it is thrown into the common trash, it will likely end up in dumps or vacant lots. In dumps, it will seep into the soil and can contaminate groundwater, and in wasteland, it can cause a greater release of greenhouse gases, such as methane, which means contributing even more to global warming, not to mention the odor horrible that will be issued! Unfortunately, it is estimated that only 1% of the cooking oil used worldwide is recycled. How about reusing this enemy of pipes, tubes and the environment in your home?

Make homemade soap with used oil

Cooking oil can be reused by you and still save money when shopping. There are several recipes for homemade soap made from used oil, but eCycle shows you the best homemade production method, see how in the article "How to make sustainable homemade soap".

Or see the homemade recipe for making liquid soap also with used cooking oil, it can be used as a washing machine and as a detergent, learn how to do it in the article "How to make sustainable liquid soap".

Recycling is simple!

Recycling cooking oil is more common than you might think. It can be reused in your own home (to make soap, for example), or by other people (there are already websites that register buyers of cooking oil). After use, allow it to cool and pour it into a tightly closed container. Or make the soap yourself or take it to the recycling station closest to your home! From there, it will be sent to specialized locations, which will be able to transform it into animal feed, detergent, cosmetics, paints, biodiesel, glass putty, etc. eCycle helps you find the right disposal point! Check here the collection points closest to you and remember, always opt for conscientious disposal, respecting the environment!
