Macauba oil: uses and benefits

Oil from macauba pulp is great for producing biodiesel, while oil from the seed does wonders for your hair.

Macaúba can be found in almost all of the Brazilian territory (as well as in some Latin American countries), mainly in Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás. Acrocomia aculeata it's a family plant Aracaceae and can reach up to 15 meters.

The tree is super resistant to burning and drought and adaptable to the climate; it can be used widely and has high economic potential, with all its by-products highly valued. Let's see some applications of its parts:

  • Trunk: can be used for constructions;
  • Sprout: of high interest, the palm heart;
  • Sheets: are raw materials for the production of fibers for threads, ropes and nets;
  • Leaf petiole: baskets, baskets and hats can be produced;
  • Flowers: decoration;
  • Strain (root): manufacture of gutters and laths;
  • Thorn: hard and resistant, used as pins for weaving;
  • Fruit: part with the highest commercial value, can be used in different ways;
  • Bark: high iron content, valuable for combating child malnutrition;
  • Endocarp: region that protects the almond, produces charcoal and activated charcoal, with high calorific value;
  • Almond: vegetable oil production. After removing the oil, it can be used in the production of animal feed;
  • Pulp: contains vitamin A and beta carotene, acts to prevent aging, fat metabolism, increases immunity and eye health, among others. It can be consumed fresh or transformed into vegetable oil.

The main economic use of the palm is the production of vegetable oil from the fruit, extracted from the pulp or almond by cold pressing. The oil can be used for the production of soap, fuel, cosmetics, feed and also in the food industry.

The macauba pulp oil can be used for food production, such as margarine, table oil (similar to olive oil) and vegetable creams - this is due to some of its nutritional and health-beneficial properties, with the presence of oxidants , fatty acids and vitamin A. Its main destination, however, is for refining and transformation into biodiesel. Studies confirm that the oil guarantees good automotive properties to the biofuel and has favorable characteristics for industrial processing. Due to the high productivity of macaúba in oil (around four tons/hectare/year), it becomes a good alternative to oils already used in production, such as soybeans and sugarcane.
