International Recycling Day is celebrated on May 17th. The date was established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and seeks to stimulate reflection on the importance of correctly disposing of the items we consume.
As industrialization grew, garbage became an environmental problem. Recycling allows a good part of the waste generated to return to the value chain, minimizing the impacts of disposal.

Brazil is the fourth largest producer of garbage in the world and, even so, recycling around here is still very low. According to a survey by the World Fund for Nature (WWF), with data from 2018/2019, our country produces about 55 trillion kilos of garbage per year, values that correspond to approximately 1.15 kg of garbage generated daily by each Brazilian . The percentage of this garbage that goes to recycling is only 1.28%.
Recycling is the process in which there is the transformation of solid waste that would not be used, with changes in its physical, physical-chemical or biological state, in order to attribute characteristics to the waste so that it becomes a raw material or product again, according to the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS).
On International Recycling Day and throughout the year, consumers need to engage and do their part, which is to dispose of their waste correctly. In cities where the city government offers selective collection services, it is generally enough to separate the recyclables from the organic ones and throw each one in the appropriate garbage can. Whatever the urban cleaning situation in your city, don't litter out in the open. The creation of dumps is a serious socio-environmental problem and must be avoided at all costs. If recycling is not possible, ensure that your waste arrives at least in a landfill.
